“Jokowi is not in the big leagues yet”
The Jakarta Post, Jakarta |

Senior
Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Guruh Soekarnoputra
said that popular Jakarta Governor Joko "Jokowi" Widodo is not ready
to become the country's next president.
"He is
dedicated and sincere in his work. But I don't think he has the capacity to
become president. It is better that he does not run for president now,"
Guruh said as quoted by kompas.com.
On Monday,
PDI-P secretary-general Tjahjo Kumolo issued a statement indicating that the
party might be warming to the idea of nominating Jokowi in 2014.
The Analysis of The Article Above
The first sentence shows us the
system of Transitivity, which contains Verbal Process.
Therefore, usually we will find that the participants of that sentence are sayer
as a subject and receiver as an object. In verbal process also, there is a verbiage
explaining what the sayer said. Furthermore, M.A.K Halliday writes in his book
“ An Introduction to Functional Grammar” that there are still some contents in
verbal process such as quoted and quoting.
This sentence has only one participant which is sayer
shown by the phrase Senior Indonesian
Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician Guruh Soekarnoputra. Actually,
that phrase just needs one word: Guruh
Soekarnoputra. However, from that phrase we can know that there is an
identity explored in circumstance which is put in the first. As we know
that Indonesian Democratic Party of
Struggle (PDI-P) is one of the biggest and oldest parties in Indonesia so
that the writer put word: senior to
emphasize the reader about its identity. On the other hand, it also can refer
to Alan’s theory about identity status. It explains there
are four the identiy statuses; achievement, moratorium, foreclosure, diffusion. Each of them has different identity. In my opinion, the sayer of this
sentence has achievement identity because the people or most people in
Indonesia have known the party. In addition, the sayer in this sentence also
has value put before Guruh Soekarnoputra. That value just reminds us that Guruh Soekarnoputra when he talked in
this article is just a politician.
Furthermore, the first sentence
shows us about verbiage that tells about Jokowi and gives him value with popular Jakarta Governor. I think, we
can really understand from that verbiage about the sayer’s personal identity.
We can catch the point from his argument that he wants to be a president and
does not want if Jokowi comes a president at present. This sentence also
ellipses the receiver because the receiver is we as readers.
